The Meniscus

What is the Meniscus in the Knee?

The meniscus is a tough cartilage that is deep inside the knee joint. The meniscus acts as a cushion between the bones of the knee and we each have 2 meniscus pads in each knee.

The meniscus can be injured typically in two ways. In younger individuals, we usually see injuries to the meniscus from activities that involve twisting of the knee (such as doing a hard pivot in soccer). In older individuals, we often see injuries related to “wear and tear” and a slow degeneration of the meniscus.

Individuals with meniscus injuries will experience knee swelling, knee pain, and sometimes, the inability to bend or extend the knee. Often people tell us that their knee feels “stiff” or “full” and that they don't trust using it like they used to.

Treatment for meniscus injuries involve a comprehensive assessment, hands on treatment, and specific exercises. Some meniscus injuries may require a referral to a sports medicine doctor, however, this will be determined at your assessment.

If you are dealing with any type of knee pain, meniscus or not, call MOMENTUM Physical Therapy in Okotoks today to find out how we can help get your knee back to 100%. Call us at 1-403-982-5600

Bursitis

Can Physical Therapy Help Bursitis?

The bursa is a thin, fluid filled sac that acts like a cushion between bones, muscles and tendons in the body. The body has over 150 different bursa, with the most commonly injured ones being in the shoulder and the hips.

Bursitis occurs when these bursa sacs swell up after they get pinched or compressed. This swelling presses the bursa into the bones, muscles, or tendons that they are designed to cushion. These swollen bursa will cause pain and limit the movement to the injured joint.

Physical Therapy is an effective tool to manage and resolve bursitis. By identifying which structures are irritating an inflamed bursa, we can show you how to rest your irritated bursa, resolve your pain, and then prevent your bursitis from returning. If you do not remove the stress to the bursa (usually a tight joint or muscle), your bursitis will return time and time agin.

If you feel like you are dealing with an irritated bursa sac, call MOMENTUM Physical Therapy in Okotoks today to find out how we can help resolve your pain. 403-982-5600
