Arthritis and Physio?

What is Osteoarthritis and can physiotherapy help?

Osteoarthritis (OA) - often referred to as arthritis - is a condition characterized by a decrease in joint space. As the joint space begins to decrease there is an increase of friction in the joint. This friction eventually leads to the formation of new bone and when the bones rub together you begin to feel some of the side effects of OA. These side effects include pain, swelling and will often affect a person’s ability to perform their activities of daily living. These symptoms can often be treated with physiotherapy.

When coming for treatment of a joint with OA you can expect to receive education on your condition, a personalized home exercise program, manual therapy, recommendations for activity modifications and, occasionally, splinting or bracing may be recommended.
