What is Sciatica?
Sciatica often refers to any type of pain that travels down the back of the leg. This pain follows along the pathway of the largest nerve in the body, the sciatic nerve, which starts in the lower back and extends down both legs.
While there is no single cause of sciatica, we know that dysfunction in the low back, hips, groin, or legs can contribute to this pain. Sciatica can vary widely from a mild ache to excruciating pain to tingling and numbness to a severe burning sensation.
Physiotherapy is a very effective tool to manage and resolve any sciatica.
To treat sciatica, your physiotherapist will need to complete a comprehensive physical assessment to determine the root cause of your sciatica. Once the origin of the pain has been identified, appropriate stretching, muscle mobilization, and strengthening exercises along with hands on therapy will be provided to alleviate your symptoms.
